Sullivan's Gulch | Northeast Portland Homes

ALL ABOUT

Sullivan's Gulch is a neighborhood in Northeast Portland, Oregon with a thriving sense of history and community. The neighborhood offers numerous amenities and resources for residents, including convenient access to downtown and the Lloyd Center mall, East Portland's primary shopping center. Sullivan's Gulch lies along several main transportation arteries, including Interstate 84, offering easy access to Downtown Portland's shopping and dining as well as the Portland International Airport. The narrow, shady streets of Sullivan's Gulch are lined with mature trees shading historic apartment buildings and large, attractive homes that call back to the early history of the Pacifc Northwest. Sullivan's Gulch is one of the older neighborhoods in Portland, evidenced by the established families, trees, and businesses in the area. The neighborhood gathers every year for informal events and annual celebrations, and neighbors can often be found chatting with each other on the sidewalks. Sullivan's Gulch is small, but densely populated, and borders the Lloyd District, Irvington neighborhood, Grant Park, and Kerns. The town is named for the topographical phenomena it sits on, the gulch that extends east from the Willamette River. Originally, the gulch was a natural area featuring a spring-fed pond and waterfalls, and modernization and the development of the Portland Metropolitan area transformed the edenic paradise into the transit corridor it is today, providing the pathway for several rail lines, the MAX lightrail system, and Interstate 84, also known as the Banfield Expressway. With the charm of a small neighborhood and easy access to Downtown via the I-84 freeway and MAX light-rail transit line, the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood is in the middle of it all. For more information about Sullivan's Gulch Real Estate, read on!

SULLIVAN'S GULCH HISTORY

The name Sullivan's Gulch commemorates Timothy Sullivan, an early farmer in the area. Sullivan settled his donation land claim on January 27, 1851. He was born in Ireland in 1805, received citizenship in the United States in 1855, and most likely received title to the claim around 1863. The gulch itself was formed between 15,000 and 13,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age when the ice dam containing Glacial Lake Missoula thawed some 40 times, causing some of the largest floods known on earth. The flood waters spilled across Idaho and eastern Washington, surged down the Columbia River and through the Gorge, flooding the Willamette Valley as far south as Eugene. This flood covered Portland with approximately 400 ft of water, laying down large amounts of silt and gravel, creating the Alameda Ridge, as well as carving out Sullivan's Gulch.
