Mt Tabor Homes & Real
Estate
ALL ABOUT
Mount Tabor is the name of an
extinct volcanic cinder cone (the only one in the U.S. that is in a
major city), the city park on the volcano, and the neighborhood of
Southeast Portland that surrounds it. The name refers to Mount
Tabor, Israel and was named by Plympton Kelly, son of Oregon City
pioneer resident Clinton Kelly. Great and eclectic Hawthorne area
shopping is just blocks away, not to mention some great eateries
located down Belmont Street, making this suburb a desired area to
reside,. The campus of Warner Pacific College (affiliated with the
Church of God) is located just south of Mt. Tabor Park.
LOCATION
The Mount Tabor neighborhood
lies between SE 49th Ave. (SE 50th Ave. south of SE Hawthorne Blvd.)
on the west and SE 76th Ave. on the east, and between E Burnside St.
on the north and SE Division St. on the south. It is bordered by
Sunnyside and Richmond on the west, the Center Neighborhood on the
north and west, Montavilla on the north and east, and South Tabor on
the south. The neighborhood also marks the eastern end of the
Hawthorne District.
MT. TABOR REAL ESTATE & HOME
STYLES
The neighborhood of Mt. Tabor
is quiet compared to the homes off Belmont & Hawthorne. The
homes are more desirable because of the view, quiet living, warm
neighborly feel and convenience of the park. Many of the older
homes have been renovated to recognize their original character and
others have held their age with little to no cosmetic changes.
Overall, Mt. Tabor is a VERY desireable place to live. It’s my
favorite place to live actually.
FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT
Mt. Tabor Park
Mt. Tabor Park is the
neighborhood's principal feature, and with everything from
spectacular scenic views to trails to basketball courts, this is the
perfect setting for family outings. How better to spend a day than
to pack a picnic, rally your friends and enjoy the tennis courts,
playground and water reservoirs? Or stay to watch the spectacular
sunset over the amazing view of the city that you can’t find
anywhere else. You’ll forget you’re in the middle of a suburban
neighborhood with the quiet and peace the park brings.
Mt. Tabor Art Walk
Held in May annually, this event showcases the
many artists who live in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. Promoting high
quality visual art in a variety of mediums, artists display and sell
their artwork at several locations around the neighborhood to be
judged by a panel. Take a walk in one of Portland’s most beautiful
neighborhoods, drink some coffee, and expose the family to great
artwork by their neighbors.
Portland Adult Soap Box Derby
Perhaps the one of the most entertaining things
about Mt. Tabor is that it’s the home of the Portland Adult Soap Box
Derby, held annually in August at Mt. Tabor Park. Find the perfect
viewing spot to watch dozens of people dress in outrageous costumes
while they race downhill in their homemade vehicles! Over the years
some of the most original derby cars included a bathtub, a
Winnebago, and an aluminum can.
Apple Tasting at Portland Nursery
Take your family to this completely free Apple
Tasting Event held annually at the Portland Nursery. A weekend long
event, you can taste around 60 varieties of apples and pears and
mark your favorites on a helpful handout. Then step over to the
market tent to pick and choose what to purchase and take home.
Vendors and craftsman have small booths set up to show off and sell
their wares also, in case fruit isn’t enough for you.
NEIGHBORHOOD EATERIES
Cooper’s Coffee
It’s not
Portland if there isn’t a neighborhood coffee shop! Cooper's Coffee
serves some of the best coffee in the city, and as a bonus they’re
very pooch friendly. Mike, owner and operator, named the business
after his chocolate lab Cooper and free dog treats are handed out at
the register. Non-canines can enjoy quiche & pastries, sandwiches,
bagels, lasagna, desserts & pies to die for. In the summertime sit
outside on the patio and refresh yourself with a cup o’ joe while
man’s best friend refreshes himself with a drink of water.
Belmont
Station
The perfect sandwich shop is a hidden gem in
this neighborhood! Choose a sandwich, build your own, or enjoy a
meal from a great selection of salads, soups, chips and amazing
chocolate chip cookies. Everything is prepared using fresh
ingredients, there’s a great patio in the back, and tea and espresso
round out the offerings. An added plus is beer on tap, wine and a
nice choice of non-alcoholic drinks. Should you find yourself
hungry, it's the perfect spot to stop when you don't want a big
meal.
Just outside Mt Tabor Neighborhood:
Only a
few blocks beyond the Mt. Tabor borders, a few other places to check
out include The Horse Brass Pub, Mt Tabor Fine Wines, Pied Cow, and
the Red Square Café.
