The Hawthorne District -
Haight Street, Portland Style
ALL ABOUT
Portland’s Hawthorne District
(also known as the
Sunnyside District) is best known
for its laid-back culture, which often draws
comparisons to San Francisco’s Haight Street. The
Southeast Portland District is filled with funky coffee shops, locally-owned
restaurants, boutiques and many great used clothing
stores, consignment shops and vintage collectables.
There’s not shortage of casual restaurants and
brewpubs, which makes the Hawthorne District a
favorite in Portland’s night life scene.
Despite all, the magic of Portland’s
Hawthorne District is
that it’s a neighborhood first and a destination
second
.
LOCATION
SE Hawthorne
Boulevard is located in SE Portland. It’s south of
Belmont Street and north of Divison Street. The most
concentrated commercial area along SE Hawthorne is
between 34th – 38th Streets but there’s plenty to
see on other parts of the street, too. The Hawthorne
District is close to both Laurelhurst Park and Mt.
Tabor Park, so it’s easy to get your fix of nature
in this urban neighborhood.
The Bagdad
Theatre and Pub is a completely remodeled & owned by
the McMenamins. Kick back in the theater and enjoy
a slice of pizza and a handcrafted ale during the
show, or come early and
enjoy dinner in the casual
pub that fronts the theater. Rumors have it that the
Bagdad is not only historical but also haunted~
The BEST fish in
Portland and strangely it's gluten free! A very casual place to
eat, has full bar and great service. I drive my mom there for lunch
all the from Sandy, Oregon. It's THAT good! Watch out during
football season, however... The
Hawthorne Fish House is also a Greenbay PACKERS bar!!!! Fish Fly!
3 Doors Down is
a popular hang-out for Italian influenced dishes
served by an owner that is eager to ensure the
customer's complete satisfaction. Enjoy a bottle of vino and some delicious appetizers and pasta dishes,
in a warm and cozy atmosphere~
Moonshadow is
our favorite place to find Celtic gifts, essential
oils, books and a warm
welcome. You can find owners Deborah & Roy in the
shop Tuesday - Sunday. The charm of Roy's Celtic
accent and the energy of his wife Deborah will
enchant you! The shop is also host to two of our
favorite friends, Hannibal and Jolly; two very
friendly Parrots that greet customers with friendly
words and sometimes a kiss! (You can see a picture
of Hannibal & Jolly among the Hawthorne Pictures on
this page)
If you can't
make it to the original
Powell's Books store in the
Pearl, then the Hawthorne location is the next
logical choice. While the store looks small on the
outside, it's actually a very large place. When you
get a second, stop by the adjacent coffee shop.
One of our
favorite places on Hawthorne. Where could you find
KidRobot toys and an abundance of vinyl figurines.
Although this store isn't intended for the young
ones, it's our 9-year old's favorite. Parental
guidance is recommended~
The Hawthorne
District is well-known for its plethora of unique
stores, so this wouldn't be a featured category if
we didn't talk about at least one used clothing
store. There is something for everyone at the
Red
Light Clothing Exchange as you dig your way through
an eclectic mix of clothing. There is something for
everyone and the prices are great. The staff is
helpful and friendly and stylish and oftentimes can
help in putting together the right outfit for you~
Located near the heart of
Portland's popular SE Portland Hawthorne District! Who wants to
stay at sterilized box hotel when you can stay in Portland's true
culture!
