Garthwick | Portland, Oregon Homes

Garthwick is a small, close-knit, and exclusive community in southeast Portland, located at the northern tip of Clackamas County. This secluded area contains only about 100 homes, and can truly be considered a secret enclave in Portland. The homes are arranged on lush, green lots around the Waverly Country Club, a private golf course and clubhouse established in 1896. Though the Garthwick neighborhood is exclusive and private, every home is within leisurely walking distance to the lively Sellwood neighborhood, filled with amazing restaurants, antique stores, a New Seasons supermarket, movie theaters, and music venues. Garthwick homes are notable for their large square footage and large front yards, as well as the over all beauty of tree-lined streets and glamorous architecture of the small community. Garthwick residents also enjoy easy access to Downtown Portland via the historic Sellwood Bridge, which means the neighborhood is the perfect combination of privacy, community, and accessibility to the best city in America.

The history of the Garthwick neighborhood is tied to both the Sellwood neighborhood and the historic Waverly Golf Course (pictured left). The 180-acre Waverly Golf Links, owned by Waverly Golf Club, was one of the largest tracts of land in the country devoted to the sport of golf. Waverley Country Club was chartered in April 1896, making Waverley one of the earliest private clubs in the nation and the second private golf club established west of the Mississippi River.

The stately entrance still stands as the gate to the community, marking a journey into a historic piece of the Pacific Northwest's luxury lifestyle.

The Rae Room is a stunning tomb in Portland, Oregon unlocked once a year for public viewing.  This mystifying final resting place of a timber baron and his wife features exquisite artistry with remarkable attention to detail.

Waverly Golf Club: Recognized as the only Platinum-rated country club in the Pacific Northwest, Waverley, which offers an array of services and facilities, is more than just a golf course. As the PNGA has so eloquently stated, “Waverley has served as the center of the golf universe in Oregon since opening in 1896.” Social enjoyment with opportunities for camaraderie supporting the golf experience remains the mission of the supporting campus.  As you travel the half mile drive down Waverly Drive towards the clubhouse, the hustle and bustle of the outside world falls away.

Parks and Public Spaces: The area surrounding Garthwick is home to over 300 acres of parks and open space. Enjoy miles of trails, wildlife areas, picnic spaces, and the nearby 140-acre Oaks Park amusement park. The wildlife area is a popular destination for bird watchers and bicyclists. Both the Sellwood Riverfront Park and the Sellwood Park offer fresh air and the chance for plenty of exercise. Sellwood Park features baseball, football, soccer and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas and plenty of native Oregon vegetation. Sellwood also offers the natural beauty and family fun of such destination spots as the Sellwood Community Garden, the Sellwood Pool, the Eastmoreland Golf Course and the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Sellwood is also home to the Westmoreland Casting Pond, historically used for the Rose Festival Milk Carton Boat Race event, it is frequently used by remote control boat hobbiets as well as for casting.

The vast array of locally-owned restaurants and retail shops are certainly a selling point for the Garthwick neighborhood. The Ugly Mug Coffeehouse is the neighborhood's premiere alternative coffee source. Featuring fresh espresso and pastries, beer, wine, and a relaxed, welcoming environment, the Ugly Mug is the perfect spot to crack open a book or catch up with an old friend. Grand Central Bakery is another great option for a fresh cup of coffee or delicious baked treats. They also do lunch, offering a variety of freshly prepared sandwiches on their own marvelous bread. And who could resist Papa Haydn's, specializing in over proportioned, gourmet luscious desserts. Gino’s has excellent Italian cuisine, Mekong Vietnamese Grill features tasty and reasonably priced creations, and Eleni’s authentic Greek dishes are sure to please. One of New Seasons’ popular local grocery stores is located on SE Tacoma.

Sellwood is also well-known for its seemingly endless supply of antique shops. Whether you are looking to furnish a whole room or simply find that perfect finishing detail, Sellwood's antique options will not disappoint. If you can't find what you're looking for in the infamous Stars Antique Mall, the Den of Antiquity has been providing the Sellwood area with gorgeous furniture and collectibles for over thirty-five years. The Den features an ever-changing roster of knick-knacks just waiting to be rediscovered. Farmhouse Antiques is a collection of eight different dealers operating under one roof. From pottery to jewelry to old-time postcards, Farmhouse is a great example of what can be accomplished when like-minded business people work together towards a single end.

The antiquing adventure doesn't end there, either. Kathryn's Antiques features ornate and beautiful glassware — a lot of it. R. Spencer Antiques focuses on buying and selling locally, and the Raven is home to some of Portland's most interesting - and dangerous - military antiques. Oh, and then there's the Sellwood Antique Collective and the Sellwood Antique Mall. Over eighty dealers work out of these two locations, so there's little chance you won't find exactly what you need and, as is often the case, a few things you don't.
