Clinton Neighborhood Guide | SE Portland Homes

ALL ABOUT

The charming Clinton area is technically part of the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood of Southeast Portland, but its unique character and popular restaurant strip have set it apart from the surrounding streets, meriting its own guide. One of the most popular hangouts - both day and night - in Southeast, the Clinton district is a quirky, close-knit community with a solid mix of down-home and up-scale amenities. The Clinton Street Theater shows art-house films and a Rocky Horror Picture Show weekly, and there are plenty of cute vintage shops and record stores to duck into. The neighborhood boasts excellent schools, and housing prices are reasonable, with lots of charming fixer-uppers just waiting for someone to she them a little love.

LOCATION

Clinton Street is located in Southeast Portland between SE Powell Boulevard and SE Division. Most of the retail stores and restaurants are located in the 20's, with major groupings of cute places to shop and dine on SE 21st and SE 26th. The official neighborhood designation is Hosford-Abernethy, but some blocks within the larger neighborhood are better know by their smaller district names, like Ladd’s Addition or Clinton. The Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood borders the Willamette River to the west, Southeast 29th Avenue to the east, Powell Boulevard to the south and Hawthorne Boulevard to the north.

CLINTON DISTRICT REAL ESTATE & HOME STYLES

The Clinton district is filled with cute bungalows and Portland four-square homes, with some 1940's homes and new construction in the mix. Along Division you'll also find attractive modern condos with creative architecture and a sustainable atmosphere. Despite these modern touches and active restoration projects throughout the neighborhood, most home styles are culturally significant, historic, quirky and charming. The Clinton area has an up-and-coming energy running through it, with young couples and single families trying to create an excited place to be and feel pride for.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Clinton Street Theater - 2522 SE Clinton St - This quirky little theater is one of the oddball gems of Southeast Portland. With weekly midnight showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show each Saturday, stand-up comdey nights, and B-grade movies on the cheap, this place is at once a little confusing and a totally fun time. Every once in a while they'll host a film festival or show classic concert footage. You really never know what you're going to find here, and that's half the fun.

Every year in July the neighborhood opens up for the Division/Clinton Street Fair, with parades, live music, art and food. It's community fun for the whole family.

FAVORITE CLINTON RESTAURANTS

Vindalho - 2038 SE Clinton St - Chef David Machado, of Lauro fame, creates upscale Indian fare, including house-made poppadoms with tamarind-date chutney, spicy potato-shrimp samosas, and chicken tikka and naan from the tandoori oven.

SubRosa - 2601 SE Clinton St - Great Italian food for dinner in the neighborhood. Try the Spicy Rosa, a great pasta dish that is worked with tomato and mushrooms, with a little kick to boot. Pizza Bread is a great appetizer, and will fill you up if you don't have a companion. Try any of the specials, usually a Lasagna or ravioli is on the specials board.

Night Light Lounge - 2100 SE Clinton St - Southeast natives flock to this understated cafe and bar for the laid-back atmosphere and filling fare. The dim lights and strong cocktails make it ideal for after-work wind-downs, but the billiards and live music provide opportunities for a good time. Comfort food like mac and cheese, tuna melts and quesadillas provide sustenance for a long night out.

Broder - 2508 SE Clinton St - At tiny wood tables, clientele crowd in elbow to elbow to sample Swedish focused fare from Danish pancakes (Aebleskivers) dusted with powdered sugar in the am to a liver pate sandwich or a lamb burger sauced with curried ketchup at lunch. It’s weekend brunch though that draws crowds to this light-filled space.
