Enjoy the Lights on Portland’s Christmas Avenue, SE Peacock Lane

Working in the Portland Real Estate Market means we get to share traditions and celebrations of the area with new residents. There’s nothing better than helping new home-owners get to know their neighborhoods, area history, and seasonal festivities to make the transition to Portland as exciting and easy as possible. Here at the McDonald Group real estate blog, we try to keep you up-to-date on Portland events and activities, and this time of year is filled with traditional celebrations of winter holidays around town.

One of our favorite activities during the winter holiday season is a trip to Peacock Lane, Portland’s Christmas Street, one block east of 39th Avenue (now Cesar Chavez Boulevard) between Stark and Belmont in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. The four-block stretch of southeast Portland is lit up for the holiday season every year with bright light displays, nativity scenes, and themed decorations, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The Christmas decorations became a tradition in the earliest years of the community. The street was planned out in the 1920s, with 22 large Tudor style homes lining the road originally lined with ornate gas street lamps.

Every night from December 15th to December 31 visitors are welcome to take in the festive sights and sounds of Peacock Lane. Horse-Drawn carriage rides are available, and the whole area shines with excitement and sparkling light. The best way to see the lights is on foot. Park somewhere in the neighborhood or at Walgreens, and enjoy a stroll down the Lane. It’s the perfect opportunity to pack a thermos of hot cocoa and some warm gloves and take the family to see some spectacular holiday spectacles! December 15th, opening night, is for pedestrians only, and hours most nights are 6 pm to 11 pm. Christmas Eve and New Years’ Eve, the festivities go until midnight.
