Portland Real Estate Insider: Old Town Hotel Materials will be Creatively Recycled Into New Low-Income Housing

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Portland Real EstateHere at the McDonald Group Real Estate Blog, we’re always looking for Portlanders and Oregonians getting creative with new construction in real estate – especially when it involves sustainable recycling and green renovation. We just heard of an awesome project in Portland’s Old Town and thought we’d share it with you. Because real estate development space in Portland is limited due to our urban growth boundaries, renovated spaces and new development often take the place of damaged or dangerous buildings. This process has led to the renewal of areas throughout Portland, and it’s been fascinating to witness the gradual polishing of industrial areas and undeveloped parking spaces into creative use of space for both residential and commercial improvements. One of these projects will take place in Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown district, where to West Hotel will be demolished to make room for the new Macdonald Center, a 42-unit apartment and outreach center that will provide housing to Old Town’s neediest residents on NW Sixth between Couch and Davis. The project will begin construction early next year, and will feature sustainable re-use of the West Hotel’s facade, materials, and structural elements.

Portland Realtor Fun Tips: Portland Sunday Parkways comes to the Northwest District this Weekend

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

This weekend the popular Sunday Parkways project is coming to Northwest Portland from 10 am to 3. A few times a year, Portland Sunday Parkways takes over a section of the city of Portland, closes streets to car traffic, clearing the way for thousands of bikes, pedestrians, families, and pets to explore the streets of their neighborhoods without having to watch out for vehicles. The 4.5 mile Northwest Portland Sunday Parkways loop will have two sections, and will connect SW Stark Street, the Pearl District , Old Town and Chinatown, and the Northwest Nob Hill and alphabet districts. That means cars will be corralled into detours, and everyone walking, running, spinning, rolling, or jumping will have the complete right of way. It’s a whole new way to look at the city.

Portland Green Real Estate: Oregon Sustainability Center Is One Step Closer to Reality

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Today marks a big victory for the new Oregon Sustainability Center as the Portland City Council unanimously voted to support a resolution to become a financial partner in development of the building. The city’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will take on some of the funding for the new center, set to the first high-rise “living building,” an emerging certification for buildings that recycle all of their water, produce their own energy, and use locally sourced, low-environmental-impact materials during construction. To be located on the outskirts of the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland, the OSC building will house a variety of nonprofits and offices of the Oregon University System and the City of Portland. In addition to housing office space for the city and nonprofits, the OSC will house an exhibition center to educate visitors about net-zero energy, water and waste buildings. The project’s website explains: (more…)
