Portland Realtor Fun Tips: Overgrown Lawn? Rent a goat!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Every week, over 50 million Americans fight back against overgrown lawns, using over 800 million gallons of gas annually while pushing those lawn mowers in the sun. Though the noise of a lawn mower on a summer afternoon is one of the classic sounds of summer, the lack of government regulations on older model mowers’ emissions mean that that iconic noise is also the sound of more air pollution than you’d think. Though new EPA regulations are attempting to reform the worst of the pollutant models,  using a typical 3.5 horsepower can emit the same amount of smog-producing emissions as a new car driven for 340 miles! A couple of Portland entrepreneurs have created a business model that provides a truly sustainable alternative to that scary fact: Next time your lawn looks a bit wild, call Goat Rental NW, and a scrappy team of goats will show up to tame invasive species and overgrown grass, showing that goatpower can go up against horsepower while protecting the environment.

To be located on the outskirts of the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland, the OSC building will house a variety of nonprofits and offices of the Oregon University System and the City of Portland. Portland Realtor Fun Tips: Oaks Park Rides are a Piece of Portland’s Past

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Before cars were the primary mode of transportation for Americans, trains, trolleys, and streetcars got people to their destinations, and trolley companies were always looking for ways to get more people to ride. One of the creative ways to get people on the rails was to get them to travel for recreation and bring their whole families to end-of-the-line Amusement Parks. In the late 19th and early 20th century, these amusement parks numbered in the thousands, featuring carousels, concerts and live entertainment, and picnic grounds near beaches or rivers for boating and water recreation. However, when cars started replacing other forms of transportation, most of these parks closed their gates and disappeared. Oaks Park Amusement Park in Portland is one of the few remaining trolley parks in the country, and it is still thriving.
