One of our favorite historic Portland estates, the Autzen Mansion in NE Portland’s Alameda neighborhood, recently sold for $2 million after sitting on the market for nearly eight years. The historic Tudor Revival home, topping over 10,000 square feet and occupying an entire city block, was built in 1927 by Kirtland K. Cutter for plywood-industry millionaire Thomas J. Autzen and was once home to Portland Trail Blazer Steve Johnson. The Autzen family remains a legacy in the Portland area, and not just in the luxury real estate market – the Portland-based Autzen Foundation supports education and the arts, and the stadium at the University of Oregon bears the Autzen name.

In Portland’s earlier years, streetcar lines connected Portland with every neighborhood and suburb in the metro area. In fact, in the early twentieth century, Portland had one of the largest streetcar networks in America. The layout of the city’s downtown streets and neighborhoods on both sides of the river were shaped by the width of streetcar tracks, turns, and stops. The city was literally designed around the trolleys that connected everyone in the area. Portland’s first streetcar line began in 1872, with horse- or mule-drawn cars that ran along First Avenue in downtown. Eventually, the difficulty of caring for the animals helped pave the way for steam-powered engine cars, cable cars and electric-powered cars. With the rise of the family car, streetcars faded from use and most lines and streetcars were relegated to history books and museums. That’s a common enough story throughout the country – but the thing that makes Portland’s different is that our streetcars are coming back, track by track.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau redistricting data, the city of Happy Valley‘s official population is 13,903. That jump up in size means the city of Happy Valley will now receive a larger share of state shared revenue that comes from cigarette, gas and liquor tax – which will help out the burgeoning community’s library, 911 service, and other neighborhood resources. We’ve witnessed the growth ourselves, from the start of new boutiques and restaurants in the area, to the beautiful parks and community green spaces that have popped up around town. Happy Valley is the place to be, and the McDonald Group Realtors are proud to serve as Happy Valley’s most experienced agents.

Here in Portland we have some fantastic seafood markets, and one of our favorites is ABC Seafood on Powell and 65th (6509 Southeast Powell Boulevard, Portland, OR 97206). A family owned establishment in the Foster Powell (FoPo) Neighborhood, the store is filled with tanks of live fish, lobsters, crabs, and shellfish. We’ve been able to get the best prices on small steamer clams and some gorgeous shrimp, and everything is so fresh! A few weeks ago we got 6 pounds of clams for less than three dollars a pound. That’s half the price of New Seasons – and we know they’re just as fresh. This is the kind of place where you point to a fish in a tank, a smiling man will reach in, grab it, and clobber it with a hammer and hand it to you in a bag. It does NOT get fresher than that. They also have a nice selection of fresh (and CHEAP) Asian produce.

Some West Linn residents have been getting up mighty early these days, thanks to a new floating fishing dock near the Willamette Falls set up to take advantage of one of the Willametter River’s deepest sturgeon holes. Anglers arrive to the new spot early to try their luck at catching a keeper-sized fish (38-54 inches from nose to fork in the tail) from the chilly waters during this year’s shorter sturgeon fishing season. The state-of-the-art dock is an 8-foot-wide, 350-foot aluminum lattice decking with non-skid gripping, and was installed by the City of West Linn, the West Linn Parks and Recreation Department, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation to replace an unsafe set of logs and planks that had served anglers for years.

While individual yard composting is popular in many Portland households and urban gardens, a lot of people do not have the time or space to compost their food and yard waste efficiently. While Portland has one of the highest recycling rates in the nation, most of those leftovers, trimmings, and food scraps go into the trash and into landfills. The city of Portland is working on a way to reduce the amount of garbage homes in Portland produce, and the initial test of the Food Scrap Curbside Collection looks to be a great success. Since the program began last May, the pilot program has picked up food scraps from 2000 homes in selected areas weekly, and reduced garbage in those areas by almost 30%. In fact, almost 30 tons of food scraps were turned into compost! The food scraps from the composting project go to a compost facility in Benton County, Oregon, where it is turned into usable organic fertilizer that helps Oregon soil, blocks weeds, retains water, and prevents plant disease and erosion.

We track down the best restaurants, sports games, parks, events, and shopping experiences to make sure visitors and new residents get to see the best of the best in the city of Roses. Ever looked outside on a rainy day and thought about capturing some of that water to use later? One local business, Portland Purple Water, is hoping to make that idea a widespread reality by installing rainwater collection devices for homes and businesses in Portland. At their most basic, rain barrels are simple rainwater collectors that capture and store a portion of the runoff from a roof downspout. Stored water can be used for non-potable purposes such as irrigating lawns, washing cars, or flushing toilets. Harvesting rainwater can lower your water bill, save energy and reduce demand on Portland’s drinking water systems.
